any tool to backup the mbr? I'd like to give ubuntu a real try (running it with wubi, so far) but I'd also like to have some way to leave everything untouched... I think I might have troubles with windows boot manager if I ever want to uninstall ubuntu...

your experience remines me of my first time trying ubuntu.. i was as scary as hell. i thought it might do some irreparable damge to my machine .. looking back a year and half.. iam completely free of windows.. and it wasnt intentional i just noticed that i hardly booted my vista partitions anymore.. so i decided i needed the extra space.. today i am completely free of windows or any of its technologies. i dont use wine or run it on virtualbox.. i do all my stuff on linux.. even my brother who is not a geek like me uses kubuntu exclusively on is laptop he is a photo journalist and has no idea what a commandline is yet he run ubuntu exclusively on his laptop. so is a window free computing possible .. i say very.. just dont rush your self.. take your time to enjoy linux and learn it. cheers
